Arthur Conan Doyle

History

Arthur Conan Doyle was born in May 1859 and passed away in July 1930. He is best known for having written 60 short stories on Sherlock Holmes and his adventures with his friend John Watson. ACD lived in England and created the Sherlock Holmes short stories in 1887 when he first published "A Study in Scarlet". He was a physician before becoming a world famous author. ACD was born in Scotland and lived in Edinburgh. His father, Charles Altamont Doyle was a known alcoholic and wass the reason his family split up in 1864. The kids and mother went to live in Edinburgh and only reunited with their father in 1867. Arthur Conan Doyle studied medicine at the University of Ediburgh Medical School. He became a doctor after graduating and was hired by Greenland whaler Hope of Peterhead in 1880. While studying, he wrote short stories but was not successful in getting all of them published. His stories were rejected by Blackwood's Magazine and his first published piece, "The Mystery of Sasassa Valley", a story set in South Africa, was printed in Chambers's Edinburgh Journal on 6 September 1879. He then became a surgeon on a ship called the SS Mayumba during a voyage to the West African coast. In 1882, ACD moved to Portsmouth and set up his own practice. In 1885, Arthur Conan Doyle married Louisa Hawkins. ACD did try to be an ophthalmologist for some time but according to his autobiography, he never saw a single patient and his efforts on being an ophthalmologist were a failure. Doyle's wife Louisa suffered from tuberculosis and died on 4 July 1906. A year after his wife's death, Doyle married Jean Elizabeth Leckie. His second wife Jean died in London on 27 June 1940. Doyle was the father of five children, two of whom he had with his first wife and three he had with his second wife. Doyle died of a heart attack at the age of 71 in East Sussex.

Sherlock Holmes

Arthur Conan Doyle created the characters of Sherlock Holmes and Dr.John Watson as well as their numerous adventures and cases. "A Study in Scarlet" was the first story that was ever published of Holmes and Watson.Arthur Conan Doyle struggled to find a publisher for his short stories on Sherlock Holmes and Dr.John Watson. ACD was inspired by his university professor Joseph Bell and Sherlock Holmes was partially modelled on Bell's character. ACD based Holmes' character on his professor and wanted to create a man that could solve crimes using science and observation as a tool to do so. The science of deduction has become world known and is a practical way of solving crimes and puzzles. Arthur Conan Doyle himself liked to deduct things and even helped solve crimes himself. He was the reason that George Edalji was released for a crime he did not commit. George Edalji contacted Doyle because he was aware that the creator of the great Sherlock Holmes also shared similar qualities he gave his creation. ACD was known for having a knack at observing things around him and took great interest in unsolved crimes as well as people wrongly accused of something they did not do. ACD created Sherlock Holmes without ever expecting him to become so famous. ACD even kills off Holmes in one of his stories but people were so outraged and mourned his death so much that Doyle brought him to back to life because he realised what a big impact Sherlock Holmes had on people. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, written by Doyle, were older gentleman and there have been many adaptations of this iconic character. Holmes is a "consulting detective" because people consult with him when they are in trouble. Doyle created the job "consulting detective" and it is now referred to Sherlock Holmes when someone uses the term. It is unfortunate that Doyle thinks his life would not be a success if the only thing people remember of him is that he created Sherlock Holmes. I personally believe that if one can be remembered for something, it shouls be something that made a difference and I think that giving the Sherlock Holmes has done just that. Sherlock Holmes is a new kind of hero, one that says that you don't necessarily have to be strong and intimating to be a hero but that being book smart can be just as good. Holmes is a character that demonstrates that you do not have to be the most popular and outgoing person in the world in order to make a difference in it.You can do great things just by being yourself and helping those in need.
